Meditation
retreat
MINNEAPOLIS -- Triple Gem of the North (TGN) and Pan-Asian Student Services of
Augsberg College will sponsor a weekend meditation retreat on July 17-18 at Augsberg
College, 2211 Riverside Ave. S., Minneapolis.
Bhante Sathi, the guiding teacher of TGN, will lead the retreat. Originally from
Sri Lanka, Bhante Sathi has been teaching meditation in Sri Lanka, Great Britain
and the United States since 1996. He now lives in Minneapolis and offers meditation
instruction and retreats.
Bhante Sathi offers meditation instruction in much the same way as the Buddha did
more than 2,500 years ago. Meditation is a practical way in which we can "wake
up" to our moment-to-moment experience. It is through this moment-to-moment
acceptance of the way things are that we find true happiness and peace. Meditation
techniques can also be valuable tools for handling the stress of everyday life. New
and experienced students are welcome.
The retreat is offered free of charge. At the end of the retreat, participants may
make an optional donation to Bhante Sathi and/or TGN. Donations to TGN are tax-deductible.
Triple Gem of the North is a non-profit organization dedicated to the study and practice
of the Teachings of the Buddha. TGN sponsors weekly meditation and Buddhist study
classes at 7 p.m. on Friday evenings at Phat-An Temple in Roseville, Minn. TGN will
sponsor a five-day retreat at Phat-An Temple on August 8-13.
Augsburg's Pan-Asian Student Services was created in 1992 to recruit and retain Asian
American students and to enhance the quality of their total experience at Augsburg.
Bao Thao, the program's director, is interested in bringing a wide range of Asian
cultural and philosophical programs to enrich the students' experience at Augsberg.

Peruvian
Shaman & Mystic
Peruvian Mystic Shaman Jorge Luis Delgado will visit the Twin Cities August 13-15
to teach of his ways, show slides of Peru and present an all-day ritual of healing
and mystical transformation.
Jorge was trained by the Kallawayas shamans of the northeast lake Titikaka region
of Peru, the lineage of the Amautas, the Wise Ones of the Andes, and with the Q'ero
Elders of the Cusco region. These wise ones are considered to be the last remaining
descendents of the Incas. Jorge, one of the few remaining pure Incan Shamans left
in the world, is working with Don Miguel, a noted Incan Shaman, on a book of his
visions and experiences.
His visit to the United States and his willingness to discuss his journey and let
us join in this mystical process, is a rare experience.
Jorge is the re-discoverer of Aramu Muru Doorway, an interdimensional portal near
Lake Titikaka. He is a founding member of The Brotherhood of the Solar Disc, an Andean
esoteric society with headquarters at Lake Titikaka that is dedicated to share Unconditional
Love through connection with the Golden Disc brought to the Andes by the Lemurian
Master Aramu Muru.
He believes that this Pachacuti (a time when the world is being turned upside down
and a new consciousness is emerging) is a time when you must go within and know yourself,
heal the wounds of the past and use the power of your own healing to empower others
to heal. He is a way-shower who is sharing ancient and hidden knowledge to assist
in the healing of all who are ready.
On Friday night, August 13, Jorge will teach the ways of the mystic and Shaman, as
well as show slides of the magical world of Peru. On Saturday, August 14, he will
conduct a ritual of healing and oneness and exploration of mystery. The location
has not been determined. The cost (all of which will go to Jorge for his work with
the Andean people and most importantly the teaching of the children) is $25 for the
Friday night lecture and slide show or $200 for Friday night and the ritual and mystical
transformation on Saturday (including lunch and materials).
Space is limited. Contact Kathryn Harwig for a reservation at (763) 315-1904.
"Flying
Workshop"
McGRATH, Minn. -- The Dwelling in the Woods, a retreat that offers guests an
opportunity to be alone in nature and listen to the inner musings of the Soul, will
host its second annual "Flying" seminar with Mallina Visarraga on August
18-23.
In ancient Hawaii, this "Flying" movement form was used by the Hawaiians
to wake up all senses before embarking on ocean voyages. It enabled them to hear
with their eyes, see with their ears and smell with their skin. The context now is
the great voyage we make through life.
The Kahuna Moving Meditation Form, done for prolonged periods of time, can make us
fully present and aware of all there is, all the time. It gives more flexibility
in body, which in turn gives more flexibility in all that we are.
Workshop facilitator Mallina Visarraga comes from a curendera (healer) lineage and
culture. She is a Doctor of Oriental Medicine with a degree from the International
Institute of Chinese Medicine in Santa Fe. Mallina, using a form called "Flying"
taught to her by Khau Abraham Kawaii, incorporates all of her knowledge in a form
of bodywork Lomi Lomi Nui. The work is transformative, compassionate, nurturing and
treats body, mind and spirit, bringing them back into balance. Individual sessions
will be available August 25-27, by appointment.

Twin
Cities smoking survey
MINNEAPOLIS -- The Minnesota Department of Health, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota
and the Minnesota Partnership for Action Against Tobacco recently released an independent
survey of more than 8,000 Minnesota adults showing that Minnesotans are most likely
to report exposure to secondhand smoke in bars and restaurants. For workers, bars
and restaurants also provide the lowest levels of secondhand smoke protection.
The American Cancer Society's Shannon Guernsey maintains that the survey results
confirm the need for smoke-free policies and urged Twin Cities leaders to take action.
"This survey sends a loud and clear message to community leaders throughout
Minnesota," she said. "Secondhand smoke is a threat to public health to
which Minnesota's workers and citizens should not be exposed. Mayors, city council
members and elected officials have a responsibility to study these results and take
action to protect people's right to breathe clean air. In St. Paul and Minneapolis,
the time to act is now - without delay and without excuses."
Advance results from the 2003 Minnesota Adult Tobacco Survey (www.mpaat.org) focus
on Minnesota adult's knowledge, attitudes and behaviors in terms of secondhand smoke.
Some of the survey's results include:
-- More than half of Minnesotans reporting secondhand smoke exposure were last exposed
in a restaurant or a bar.
-- While 82 percent of Minnesotans who work indoors report smoke-free policies at
work, bar and restaurant workers lag well behind. Only 23 percent of restaurant-bar
workers and five percent of bar workers report smoke-free policies that spare them
exposure to secondhand smoke.
-- 93 percent of Minnesotans report that smoke-free policies in restaurants would
either not change or increase how often they go out to eat.
-- 54 percent of Minnesotans who work where smoking is permitted would prefer to
work in a smoke-free environment.
"This survey confirms so many things that we already know and need to act upon,"
Corinne Ertz of the American Cancer Society said. "We know that secondhand smoke
is a threat to public health, that not all workers are given the right to breathe
clean air, that workers without protections want them and we know that smoke-free
policies don't hurt business. With all of this knowledge, what could possibly justify
not acting when you have the opportunity?"
The American Cancer Society is dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health
problem by saving lives, diminishing suffering and preventing cancer through research,
education, advocacy and service. For more information, call toll free 1 (800) ACS-2345

Enchanted
Forest Intuitive Camp
BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C. -- The fifth annual Enchanted Forest Intuitive Camp will take
place July 25-30 at the YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly in Black Mountain (near Asheville)
in partnership with ChildSpirit Institute, a nonprofit foundation.
The camp was started in 1999 by Nancy Baumgarten, along with Llael's godmother, Linda Iribarren, a master intuitive.
Enchanted Forest Intuitive Camp has been held each year at different resorts in the
southeastern forests, and at the beautiful Blue Ridge Assembly Conference Center
outside of Asheville since 2002.
"We firmly believe that all humanity is endowed with the sense of intuition
and access to the mystical," Baumgarten says. "Many people are experiencing
an awakening in their lives at this time. This camp is designed for those families
who find themselves raising children who express this consciousness awareness on
a regular basis.
"Camp continues each year to incorporate our joint visions of a new paradigm,
spiritually-based education as we all evolve our understanding. The Enchanted Forest
Intuitive Camp is a magical blend of the traditional family camp and a conference
on Consciousness. Presenters are experts in their field and are chosen for their
known intuitive capacities, high integrity and capacity for JOY!"
The Intuitive Camp offers scholarships as available, and will accept donations to
the cause of children's spirituality through the ChildSpirit Institute (childspirit.net).

Religion
and homophobia
MADISON -- All members of faith communities, as well as the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual,
Transgender (LGBT) and Allied communities, are invited to a free public discussion
on "How Can Religion Help Heal Homophobia?" from 4-7 p.m. Sunday, July
18, at Wisconsin Union Theater at UW-Madison Memorial Union, sponsored by Creating
Visible Community.
A panel comprised of leaders from a variety of faiths speak on the role of religion,
spirituality, and personal responsibility in healing homophobia. Discussion will
range from history to civil rights to finding the language to confront homophobia
with compassion, authority, and authenticity.
Audience questions and participation are invited.
Questions that may be discussed include: Are all gays going to hell? Will there be
queers in heaven? Can an LGBT person have a spiritual practice, faith, God? Do "out"
LGBT folks have any place in a mainstream religious community? Should all LGBT people
reject religion? Should a straight person of faith "come out" against homophobia?
What happens in society when some people use their religion as "fact"?
How can the LGBT and faith communities come together with one heart? How can we find
strength, language, and compassion together in responding to hatred? Aren't we all
created equal? Can homophobia be stopped? Unlearned? Healed? Can religion actually
help heal homophobia?
Creating Visible Community forms coalitions with other social justice groups, educates
the public about homophobia, and creates visibility for the LGBT and Allied community.
It encourages diversity of life experience, viewpoint, politics, religion, family
structure and interest.
